(Parents just a note that we’ve had discussions about Martin Luther King Jr., Rosa Parks, Ruby Bridges and Malala Yousafzai, to name a few,- so your kiddo is familiar with these historical figures. Weekly Religion Activity

Goal: I can learn that God wants me to forgive others.

Try It Out!: Watch the Veggie Tales episode God Wants Me To Forgive Them? Then have a discussion with your parents about what you just learned. What does God want us to do when someone hurts our feelings? How should we treat one another? Has there been a time when your feelings were hurt? What happened? How did you feel? Is it OK to take time to think and cool down before forgiving someone? Have you ever hurt anyone else’s feelings (sibling, family member or friend)? How did you feel when that happened? Did you apologize? What are some good ways we can forgive others as well as forgive ourselves when we make mistakes?

Veggie Tales–>https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=b21_lqLET0s

After watching the Veggie Tales episode about forgiveness, role play with a parent or sibling about what you would do if you hurt someones feelings (said something hurtful, pushed you, took away a toy you were playing with or broke something special of yours). What should you say/do? How should you act? Try these strategies: “I’m sorry for…. It’s wrong because… Next time I will… Will you accept my apology? *if you friend needs time and space, allow them to cool down before they accept you apology.

Mothers (as per my email on Saturday)~ I want to apologize because I TOTALLY dropped the ball on Mother’s Day thinking that it was this coming Sunday. That’s why this week for writing workshop we will be doing the Mother’s Day writing lesson that we should have been doing last week!

Goal: I can listen to the book Just Me and My Mom by Mercer Mayer. I can make a Mother’s Day book by using these sentence frames: This is my mom! If my mom was an animal she would be a ______ because _____. My mom loves when I _____. If I could go anywhere with my mom, we would go to _____. I love my mom!

Required Activities:

1) Complete the Try It Out! Activity

Math

Goal: I can use a ten-frame and counters to help me subtract from 10.

https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=pwQKugrFmJQ

Check Out My Example–>https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=5Ld5OcM1hIQ

Try It Out!:Grab a piece of paper and draw a ten-frames by making a large rectangle and diving it up into 10 spaces. Get 10 manipulatives~ cubes, counters, blocks, playdough balls, legos, etc. Place 10 counters in the ten-frame and ask your kiddo how many are there and how they know this? (10 because each space is filled up in the ten-frame). Then tell your kiddo a word problem starting with 10– there are 10 birds in the tree. 3 fly away. How many birds are left in the tree? Model this with your kiddo. Is there more or less birds from when we started (less). Why? (because they flew away and we had to take away counters). How many did I start with (10). How many did I take away (3). How many birds are left in the tree (7. Because 10-3=7). Have your kiddo write out the number sentence! **REMEMBER: BIGGEST NUMBER COMES FIRST WHEN I AM SUBTRACTING AND ALWAYS TAKE FROM THE BACK WHEN YOU ARE SUBTRACTING!!**

Do the same sort of word problems for 10-0=10, 10-1=9, 10-2=8, 10-3=7, 10-4=6, 10-5=5, 10-6=4, 10-7=3, 10-8=2, 10-9=1, 10-10=0. To extend your kiddos learning ask if they see a pattern or a number patter? (bigger number always comes first, you end up with less when subtracting, there are fact families 10-1=9 and 10-9=1 *same numbers different order).

https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=1W5aYi3lkho

Try It Out!:Grab a piece of paper and draw TWO ten-frames by making two large rectangle and diving them up into 10 spaces each. Get 20 cubes (10 one color and ten the other color- they can be legos, 2-sided counters, small square pieces of paper 10 in one color and 10 in the other or 2 different colored crayons to color cube representations). Build a cube train (10 blue* or any other color you have and 7 red* or any other color you have). Tell your kiddo, “Billy has a cube train. How many cubes long was his cube train?” (17) “How do you know this?” (because there are 10 blue cubes and 7 red cubes and 10+7=17). Then break apart the cubes into two groups (10 blue cubes in one group and 7 red cubes in the other group). Tell your kiddo “Billy put cubes in the ten-frames. How many cubes did Billy put in his top ten-frame? (10) and how many cubes did he put into the bottom ten-frame?” (7). “How many cubes are there in all?” (17). Now have your kiddo write a number sentence that represents their ten-frames (10+7=17). Do something similar for 10+8 and 10+9. After, you can extend the lesson by asking your kiddo to show you other teen number representations, sums and number sentences.

Tuesday 5/5

~For prayer this morning, please say a Hail Mary as well as special intentions for all those who have passed away.~

Happy Cinco de Mayo!

ELA

Goal: I can spell, read and write words with digraphs. I can listen to a parent read various words and distinguish the long vowel sound from the short vowel sound.

Sight Word Review https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=6pQvG6kZUTs

Try It Out!:  1) With the letters you used yesterday read and write these words with your parent(s): path, with, chat, chin, shed, shut, quack.

2) With the same letters spell these /ck/ digraph words with your parent(s): shock, lick, deck, pack.

Click To Get The Digraph Cheat Sheet–>Digraph Cheat Sheet

*When you are sounding out your words use your strategies: use your fingers or arm to tap out sounds, pull the vowel or chunk the 2 ending sounds then add the beginning sound in to form the word. Make sure when you’re sounding out your digraphs, your letters are put together to make ONE sound!

3) Have your parents read you these words: lick, like, soak, back, bake, shin, shine, peek, peck. Tell your parent whether the word is a short vowel word or a long vowel word and which vowel it is. *Remember long vowels say their own name! Like cOne*

Required Activities:

1) Login to https://login.i-ready.com/ and complete 1 reading lesson

2) Do the Try It Out! activities

3) Practice reading these sentences:

The little duck is yellow.

Do you like the color green?

Writing

Goal: I can construct a sentence with SWAG all by myself. We will share these examples with our classmates over Zoom on Thursday!

Sentence Frame Activity–>https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=SnTQHYg7qpY

Sentence Frame Activity Directions:

1) brainstorm a sentence

2) write the sentence on a piece of paper as neatly as you can (try to keep it to one line in length).

3) check for SWAG

4) carefully cut around your entire sentence so it makes a “sentence strip” *be careful not to cut off any words or letters!

5) make 2 snips (NOT GOING ALL THE WAY THROUGH THE PAPER) in between each word to make “tabs”

6) bend the tabs back to show that there is a nice “space between each word and each word has breathing room!”

7) read your sentence and enjoy your very own sentence frame!!

Remember to use SWAG and SOUND OUT YOUR WORDS!

S-Starts with a capital

W- Written neatly

A- A space between words (Not a space between letters!)

G- Given punctuation!

*Parents, please note that your kiddo should be using phonetic spelling. Other than correctly spelling very simple CVC words (hat, man, lip…) they should be sounding out their own words to produce phonetically spelled words (ex. I hav a litl flor in my bak yrd –> I have a little flower in my backyard). If your kiddo is struggling with this activity- no worries! Have him/her sketch a picture and label their picture.

Try It Out!: From the example above, construct your own SWAG sentence frame activity!

Required Activities:

1) Complete the Try It Out! Activity

Math

Goal: I can identify patterns found in teen numbers, with the constant of one ten and the variable number of ones. I can make drawings and write number sentences for numbers 11-19.

https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=uedvwH6Ay18&t=20s

Check Out My Example–>https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=ktJAWwf259g

Try It Out!:Grab a piece of paper and draw TWO ten-frames by making two large rectangle and diving them up into 10 spaces each. Get 20 cubes (10 one color and ten the other color- they can be legos, 2-sided counters, small square pieces of paper 10 in one color and 10 in the other or 2 different colored crayons to color cube representations). Parents: put 10 red (or any other color) cubes in the first ten frame. Then put 8 yellow (or any different color from the first set of 10) cubes in the second ten frame. Then write out 10+8=18 (coordinating the colors of the numbers with the cubes in the ten frame). Ask your child- “how do the counters in the ten-frames match the numbers in the number sentence?” (the ten frame with red counters show a red number 10 in the number sentence. The ten-frame with the yellow counters shows a yellow number 8 in the number sentence. The answer shows 18 as one red “ten” and 8 yellow ones).

Do the same set up in the ten frames for 10+1=11, 10+2=12 …. all the way up to 10+9=19. Have your child look at your representation in the ten frame and write their number sentence to match.

Check Out My Example–>https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=BrI8LaLcaL8

*(optional)* If you want to extend your kiddos learning, have your child trace both hands on a sheet of paper. After counting the fingers, have your child write 10 at the top of the paper to show how many. Have your child choose 2 different color crayons and color the fingers in a combination that makes 10(whole). With the matching crayons, have your child write the number of fingers in each color at the bottom of the paper (part, part).

Tuesday 4/14

~I am the place where God shines through. For He and I are one, not two. I need not fear or fret or plan. He wants me where and as I am. And if I stay relaxed and free, He will work his plan through me. Amen.~

ELA

Goal: I can distinguish the long vowel sound from the short vowel sound in various words. I can spell CVC words.

*Remember- long vowels say their own name like mEET, cApe, cOne, Unicorn, cUbe, Icicle, pIne*

Site Word Review  https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=E0vWOwIflTs

Try It Out!:

1) Have an adult read these words to you: kit, kite, quit, quite, rate, rat, lead, led. Tell the reader whether the word had a LONG Vowel sound or a SHORT Vowel sound and which vowel it is!

2) With the letters you used yesterday, have a parent read these words to you as you spell them out with your letters. Then read the word back to them. tab, Jim, tin, rat, big, tip, web, yes

*When you are sounding out your words use your strategies: use your fingers or arm to tap out sounds, pull the vowel or chunk the 2 ending sounds then add the beginning sound in to form the word.

Required Activities:

1) Login to https://login.i-ready.com/ and complete 1 reading lesson

2) Do the Try It Out! activities

3) Practice reading these sentences:

Please get the ball.

The man ran out the door!

Writing

Differentiation: If you child seems to be struggling with this activity- have your kiddo draw a picture related to Goldilocks’ adventures and label the picture. Or have your child dictate the sentence he or she wants to write while you copy the words down. Then have your child read and rewrite what you wrote.

Remember to use SWAG and SOUND OUT YOUR WORDS!

S-Starts with a capital

W- Written neatly

A- A space between words (Not a space between letters!)

G- Given punctuation!

Monday 3/30

~For prayer today please say your morning intentions as well as a Prayer of Thanks for all the good we have in our lives.~

As we get closer to Holy Week- it is important to think of Jesus and all he has done for us. Please view this “Children’s Virtual Stations of the Cross” video and have a discussion with your child about the stations. We have had discussions in class that some aspects of the Stations will make us feel upset, sad or uncomfortable. It is important to talk about this sadness and unsettling feelings because it allows us to empathize with Jesus’ suffering. Our sadness will not last for long, as Easter will be approaching soon- a time to celebrate the rising of Jesus as he stays in our hearts forever. https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=j0qv7c4PsrA

Have him/her sketch a Spring picture and label their picture.

Writing

Goal: I can use my sentence about Spring from yesterday to extend my writing.

Check Out My Example–> https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=WKuz_umueRE

*Parents, from the demonstration, you will notice that I did not spell my last sentence correct because I wanted to model how to stretch out the sounds I hear in words. Kindergarten expectation is that students can sound out and record the beginning, middle and ending sounds in words. If your kiddo is struggling with this activity- no worries! Have him/her use the Spring sketch from yesterday to draw and label more signs of Spring.

S-Starts with a capital

W- Written neatly

A- A space between words (Not a space between letters!)

G- Given punctuation!

Try It Out!: Can you help me fix this sentence?!  I havea little bat

Click to Check Your Answer–> https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=HZKv9k0Tj98

Required Activities:

1) Use your writing from yesterday to extend your writing about Spring.

Suggested Activities:

-Write a letter to a friend or a loved one. You can include a picture in your letter. Send it to them to cheer them up!

Math

Goal: I can break apart numbers of 4 and 5 into two parts to make an addition sentence.

https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=amxVL9KUmq8

Check Out my Example--> https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=Cvjyw5b384s

Try It Out!: With counters (or any manipulate you have in your house) have your kiddo separate “the whole” to get 2 parts. Have your child tell how many counters are in the first group and how many are in the second group. Then have your child tell you the whole (the sum/answer).

Example of Parent Prompt: 4 dogs go outside. This is the whole or our answer. 3 dogs play with a ball. 1 dog plays with a stick. What are the two parts? kiddo responds: 3 and 1.  So if 3 dogs play with a ball and 1 dog plays with a stick, how many dogs are there altogether? Kiddo responds: 4. That is our whole! Continue this activity by giving 4 and 5 manipulatives, at a time, to your kiddo and ask them to separate the whole into two parts (4=1+3, 4=2+2, 4=4+0, 5=2+3, 5=5+0, 5=4+1…) Extension: have your child write out problems.

*Stick with small numbers and addition for now!! 4 and 5 MAX!

Required Activities:1) Login to https://login.i-ready.com/ and complete 1 math lesson

Suggested Activities:

-Check out and explore the activities on Mrs. Payne’s webpage http://kpayne.saintkaterischool.org/home-learning/
